Council passed a motion today allowing work to begin on new helicopter facilities in Mowbray to be used in the construction and maintenance of the Wangetti Trail.

The designated area is on the coast side of the Captain Cook Highway between Tresize Road and Yule point (see map below for approximate location).

The long-awaited Wangetti trail requires helicopter access for its construction as it’s the only practical method of delivery for materials and machinery.

Concerns were raised during submissions about wildlife disturbance – concerning dugong habitat in particular – however these concerns were considered met with strict conditions by Council’s planning team.

“I don’t see marine mammals as a sticking point for this development,” said Council’s Planning Officer, Daniel Lamond.

“We could impose further restrictions but it would affect the functionality of the operation, and it’s not necessary in our view,” he said.

The flight path in and out will be strictly monitored to ensure that unnecessary flying over wildlife is avoided.

Douglas Shire Mayor, Michael Kerr reiterated that this was an essential part of a major project for the douglas Shire.

“This isn’t just a joyflight company, this is a business that will be operating for a three year term purely for the building of the Wangetti Trail. The Wangetti Trail is an extremely important part of this Shire’s future as well,” said Kerr.

“I'm sure if the operator breaches any of these environmental concerns, and I guarantee that people will be watching them, that can be dealt with in an appropriate manner.
