There is no secret that businesses in the region are grappling with staff shortages, employers are having to be creative to find new ways to entice workers, in some cases offering free accommodation and meals.

Normally this time of year businesses would be looking to hire backpackers to help fill the gap, but with no international travel job vacancies are surging.

The concern with a workforce shortage is something that is worrying a wide scope of businesses throughout the region and for good reason. Companies that aren't able to fill positions with workers will be left with stretched resources that result in damaging implications for both the short-term and long-term outlook of the business.

Migration Plus, a leading migration firm, might have the solutions needed to bolster the workforce in the region, they are offering complimentary consultations for businesses in the Douglas Shire on 28 May to help local businesses address the labour force shortage that has struck the hospitality and tourism industries.

Migration Plus Principal and Director, Ms Mateja Rautner said although International borders remain closed, the Australian Government is seeking to attract international talent to assist with post-COVID-19 recovery.

“There are many students, graduates, and skilled temporary workers who are already here in our region and in Australia who are looking for options to stay and work in Australia permanently.

“Many businesses already employ temporary residents, such as student visa or working holidays visa holders, and would like to continue employing them in the future on a permanent basis. It is important that the business owners are informed about options and obligations that sponsorship entails, and we are here to help,” said Ms Rautner.

The Australian Government has recently announced additional options to address these shortages, such as:

  • International students working in tourism and hospitality are now allowed to work full time.
  • Temporary residents in Australia have the option to apply for a 408 COVID-19 visa for 12 months if working in the tourism and hospitality sector.
  • New options have been announced with the signing of the FNQ DAMA (Designated Area Migration Agreement) Variation agreement, including additional areas and occupations that can be nominated – details to be announced shortly.

Migration Plus is a prominent migration firm that provides professional migration advice to businesses and corporate groups including the hospitality, tourism, mining, agriculture, and air services industries, as well as providing advice to individuals seeking to study, work and live in Australia.

With support from the Douglas Chamber of Commerce, Ms Mateja Rautner of Migration Plus will be available to meet with interested business owners from 9 am – 5 pm 28 May at the Port Douglas Community Hall.

If you would like to book an initial complimentary consultation, you can call 4041 2620 or email ccheng@migrationplus.com.au
