Post pandemic home renovation boom

BUSINESS FEATURE

More and more households are buzzing with the sounds of drills and hammers as home renovations go through the roof in the trimmings of the pandemic.
Over the past year with the increase of people staying and working from home, they have been looking at their spaces with fresh eyes - the old fixtures and tired fans have turned into eyesores of the home, making homeowners eager to undertake new projects creating a home renovation frenzy.
Added to that is the HomeBuilder scheme, which has also seen a boom in the number of new homes built, keeping local tradies busy.
BH Electrics owner Brad Sims said he has seen an increase in activity in home remodelling with the top motivators being, to save money through efficiency, or to modernise and add value to the home.
“Simple things like new paint or changing out fans or light switches can have a big impact on the look and feel of the home,” said Mr Sims.
“Electrical fixtures have come a long way over the years, gone are the days of large yellowing fan controllers. Slimline push button light switches and power points come in a huge range of finishes both modern and slick, giving the home a high-end look. This simple energy-efficient upgrade can also save families money.
“Fans have also embraced new technology and are now made from composite moulded materials which gives more air movement and are easier to clean with an endless array of finishes. DC motors are becoming more accessible for residential properties - this style of fan is quieter and more energy-efficient than a standard AC fan,” said Mr Sims.
Depending on how comfortable you are on the tools, some renovations make ideal DIY projects, however, there are various projects you should not attempt, like your electrics. For those, it’s best to bring in an expert to help you out. They are often loaded with advice and suggestions that you would never have thought of.
When undertaking a large renovation, it’s important to have the right trades in place, advises Brad Sims.
“Good trades will work together to ensure that the project runs efficiently through the different stages ensuring that minimal or no rework is required.
“One thing that is often overlooked is future maintenance requirements, you should plan your installations so that trades will be able to get access later on,” said Mr Sims.
