A 72-year-old Port Douglas man was allegedly involved in two crashes on the Captain Cook Highway, north of Cairns, yesterday, that left three vehicles on their roofs in the space of just a few minutes.

A police spokesperson said at around 12:45pm, a Mitsubishi Triton driving northbound crashed into the rear of a Ford Falcon utility vehicle at the Machans Beach roundabout, allegedly causing it to veer off the roadway and roll onto its roof.

“Police will further allege the Triton continued driving north and collided with a maroon Holden Commodore utility vehicle at the Holloways Beach roundabout,” the spokesperson said.

“Both vehicles veered off the roadway and rolled onto their roofs.

“The driver of the Mitsubishi Triton, a 72-year-old Port Douglas man, was transported to Cairns hospital with minor injuries.

“The driver of the maroon Holden Commodore, a 58-year-old Holloways Beach man was also transported to Cairns hospital with head injuries.”

All others involved were treated at the crash scene.

The highway was impeded and down to one lane northbound however, cleared within an hour of the crash.

Investigations are continuing and assistance is sought from anyone who may have dash cam footage of the crash to contact police.
