After two weeks without football due to weather conditions, local teams played away in Mareeba coming away with a victory in the Second Division and a loss in the Third Division.

Last Friday Douglas United FC played Mareeba Bulls for the third round of the FNQ Football League season.

The Bulls made the game tougher than the two previous rounds (9-0 and 6-0 wins) but coach Chris Snel's Dragons proved themselves strong enough to hold on to the win.

With two goals, Dragon’s Jamie Gosling gave the team a 2-0 lead before a Mareeba goal put the score at 1-2. However, it wasn’t long before Gosling passed the ball to the box and where teammate Adam Howel scored a head goal.  

With a nice definition over the keeper, Ramiro Vilar scored the Dragon’s fourth and although the match seemed to be over, the Bulls inched closer again bringing the score to 4-3.

The Bulls was concerned about attacking more than defending and again, Vilar took advantage of the weakness in defence and went head-to-head with the keeper putting the ball near the post for a goal, final score - 5-3.

“We performed a good match. We kept the possession of the ball and we could play our way,” said Vilar.

The third Division Team didn’t have the same luck. In the first half Mareeba took a 2-0 lead and owned the ball possessions. 

At the beginning of the second half, Bulls increased the difference putting the match 3-0. With two successive goals (Andrea Moreschini and OG), Dragons tried to tie the match, but the hope didn’t last long: Bulls scored the 4th and 5th goal to end 5-2.

“Mareeba played a good game. They are a strong team and we felt it,” confirmed Diego Montarcé, Dragons´ centre back.

Next Friday from 6.30pm both local teams will play home against Marlin Coast at the Port Douglas Sports Complex.
