Tim Gurner, the multi-billion-dollar property developer, who is behind a $60 million ‘mixed use’ development on the 69-73 Murphy Street site in Port Douglas, said he is open to listening to those who oppose the project.

And it was learned today that Gurner has been contacted and there will be discussions next week with those concerned about the project.

“While we have previously not had any contact from Gurner, we are pleased to report that this changed today, when a good friend of Gurner’s reached out directly to him.

“As a result we look forward to speaking with him next week,” said Carmel Angelino, a spokesperson for Protect our Paradise, a group that was established to oppose the development.

In re-affirming that he will be proceeding with the project, he said would be happy to work with the ‘objectors’.

“I develop a lot of projects across Australia and always work with objectors to try to resolve whatever issues we can,” he said.

Gurner, who has labelled this his ‘love project’, said he was proceeding with the project and excited with what will be created for Port Douglas. He did not say if he would be visiting port anytime soon.

Once the necessary approvals have been made, The Melbourne-based Gurner will use this development to continue its diversification into the ultra-high-end wellness, tourism and hotel space for a boutique ultra-luxury wellness, hotel and private residences retreat in Port Douglas situated on 2833sqm of beachfront land.

Once complete the site is set to feature 16 ultra-luxury private residences and a further 18 boutique hotel rooms.

Meanwhile, in December last year, Newsport reported that a Douglas Shire Council spokesman said their planning team will assess the application in line with the 2018 Planning Scheme in coming months.

“Under the Planning Scheme, the development proposal is code assessable development. As a consequence, the development proposal will not require public notification under the Planning Act 2016.

“Despite not requiring public notification, opportunity is still provided to the public to make comment on the proposal.

“However, any submissions received will not have third party appeal rights with respect to any decision made on the proposal.”

The development application documents are available for viewing at Council’s website.
