A popular fixture on the local hairdressing scene will close its doors for the final time this weekend.

HU Hairdressers Unite in Port Douglas will cease trading on Saturday 27 March at 4:00pm following a tough year during COVID-19.

Owner Crystal MacLennan said she would like to thank all her local and regular clients who have supported the business over the last nine years.

“Their support has helped keep locals permanently employed and I’m very proud of the success of the business to this date,” she said.

“It's sad as I am one of many small businesses who are faced with this tough decision to close my business throughout the COVID pandemic.

“It has been very stressful and mentally challenging to survive this far. Once the doors are closed business owners still face the financial and legal ruin it causes coming to the decision to end trade. Which has been a nightmare whilst still trying my hardest to keep a brave face. I believe I'm not alone in this battle.

“I wish all the small business owners in the Port Douglas area the best rebuilding their lives and business.”

Ms MacLennan said she received a lot of support from family, friends, and locals which helped her through the darkest days and encouraged other struggling business owners to ask for help.

“It's never easy to admit we are struggling at times but there is so much support out there.

“I’d also like to thank my landlord for the assistance they gave me throughout the COVID period. I’m sure many have helped their tenants.”

Hairdressers United opened on Macrossan Street in 2011 and has seen many local hairdressers and apprentices hone their skills over the years including the current ladies Shikera Hurd and Jade Fobister.

“I would like to thank Shikera and Jade for their loyalty, understanding and support. They are amazing young ladies who have such a bright future ahead of them,” Ms MacLennan said.
