Eight young swimmers from the Mossman Meteors Swim Club have come home with top results after representing the region at the North Queensland Swimming Championships in Smithfield.

Over the weekend of 6 and 7 March, the swimmers competed across a range of events against clubs from around the Far North including Tully, Cooktown, The Tablelands, and metro Cairns.

The Mossman team has been undergoing a rebuild, and like many sporting clubs in the region has been hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Despite that, they managed to field a team of four boys and four girls and overcame their small size by exceeding even the quiet expectations of their coaches, Treena and Ian Skeggs-Grant.

Mr Skeggs-Grant said the competition brought out the best in the Mossman swimmers, with 40 of 48 swims being personal best times.

“Those performances when pitted against the best in the region were enough to reap the team a final result of nine first places, five second places, six third places and a further 25 swims placed in the top ten,” he said.

“Additionally, despite having only just enough swimmers to field a relay for each gender the Meteors had three fourth placings and one bronze medal, a significant achievement against some much larger clubs.

“At the conclusion of the meet, Mossman was ranked 7th overall. This meant that they had not only finished in front of all the teams of equal or smaller size, but they had also surpassed two clubs with significantly more competitors.

“The mighty Meteors punched well above their weight all weekend.

“Despite awesome performances from every one of their athletes the club’s swimmer of the meet has to go to Tyler Johnson for taking out the first place point score in the 10-year-old boys category,” he said.
