On its final day of the Tropic Chopper Tour, the Westpac Lifesaver Rescue Helicopter Service flew over the Ironman event before landing at Reynolds Park in Port Douglas.

Equipped with two pilots and crewman, the helicopter was met by patrolling members at Port Douglas Surf Life Saving Club and the Douglas Shire Deputy Mayor, Lisa Scomazzon.

Club members and beachgoers had the opportunity to get up close and look at Surf Life Saving Queensland’s new eyes in the sky and quiz the crew on the role they play in protecting swimmers on Queensland beaches.

The young nippers were especially excited and even got a chance to sit in the new multi-million-dollar hi-tech machine.

Surf Life Saving Queensland CEO Dave Whimpey paid tribute to the Far North Queensland members who are currently patrolling.

“Our North Queensland volunteers’ passion and dedication is second to none when it comes to keeping people safe on their beaches,” he said.

Mr Whimpey said the Port Douglas visit was able to give local volunteers the opportunity to learn of what’s possible within surf lifesaving, in addition to thanking them for their continued dedication.

“Today is our final day of the Tropic Chopper Tour and I am so proud we have been able to land in six destinations across regional Queensland.

“Our helicopter has travelled more than 1,600 kilometres and greeted thousands of delighted members and school children.

“We hope we have inspired people along the way to become involved in their local club.”

Queensland State General Manager for Westpac Greg Crocombe said they are very proud of the long-standing partnership with Surf Life Saving having sponsored the Service in Queensland since 1976.

“With 13 full-time staff and 27 volunteer crew, who last year conducted 253 patrols, surveyed more than 13,000 beaches and spotted nearly 23,000 rips, there is no doubt that the Westpac Lifesaver Rescue Helicopter Service plays a critical role in keeping Queenslanders safe at the beach,” Mr Crocombe said

“We are delighted to bring the helicopter and its crew to communities along the coast so they can get an up-close look at our eyes in the sky.”

After this final visit, the Westpac Lifesaver Rescue Helicopter will embark on its journey home to Caloundra.
