Raiders 6 (6) JCU Mariners (15) 34

The Port Douglas Reef Raiders have dropped to second from last on the points table after losing 34-6 to JCU Mariners in round seven of the Rainforestation Cup at the sports complex on Saturday. JCU led 15-6 at half-time.

Raiders have won a single game, lost three and drawn two and with their eight points, are six ahead of Brothers who have yet to record a win this season.

This is a disappointing turn around after last season’s success when they won the Cup.

After 20 minutes, Raiders dominated and led 6-5 through two penalties by Luke Edwards. As the half grew older, Raiders had their opportunities to score, but failed to capitalise.

“JCU ran away with the game in the second half and showed why they are the benchmark of the competition having been undefeated to date.

“Although the scoreboard doesn’t suggest it, we feel we have made good improvements over the past few games and hope to continue this into the back end of the season.

“Top performers from the weekend were Esteban Correa, Rodrigo Larranaga & Damien Friedrichs,” said Raiders coach Travis Gooch.

The Raiders host Barron Trinity Bulls at 4pm at the sports complex on Saturday. There will also be a celebration of past and present players.

Other scores:

Wanderers 43 Barron 29
Southside 27 Brothers 0
