Police urge motorists to slow down in school zones

The return of schools across the Far North today also marks the return of school speed zones and the message to drivers from police is slow down.
Senior Constable Matt Cornish said after a long school holiday, motorists can become complacent in school zones.
“School zones are now in force across the Far North,” he said.
“With school heading back and a lot of young children around schools, it is a timely reminder to all motorists need to be mindful of their driving habits.
“Lots of children are going to be very excited running around schools so be extra mindful of your surroundings.”
School zones impose a 40km/h limit between 7:00am and 9:00am and 2:00pm and 4:00pm.
“During these times motorists need to slow down,” Senior Constable Cornish said.
“Police will be very active in school zones to make sure everyone is abiding by the rules.”
Senior Constable Cornish also urged parents to educate their children about road safety.
“It is a great time to remind parents to pass on safety messages to their children about how to be safe around roadways.
“Show them the designated locations to cross at school which are often manned by a lollipop lady or man.
“We encourage parents to be active in educating kids around road safety and physically take the kids to school in the first days to give them a rundown on the relevant crossing areas,” he said.
