The face of shopping in Port Douglas is set for a shakeup as Target Country Port Douglas closes its doors, making way for a new Kmart K Hub.

The Port Douglas Target store will close for good this week on 6 February.

A Kmart spokesperson said conversion works on the store will start shortly after with the planned Kmart store opening on 25 February.

Last year, Target announced a massive change to its brand which would see 10 to 25 large format Target stores and 50 Target Country stores Australia wide close over the next twelve months, while others such as Port Douglas will be rebranded.

“Since Target made an announcement to reshape the store network back in May, with a smaller number of stores and a stronger focus online, we have successfully converted 12 Kmart stores and 15 brand-new concept K Hubs, replacing the existing Target Country stores, with another 38 stores to convert by end the end of February,” the spokesperson said.

“As a business, we’re committed to opening stores in new communities; and we can’t wait to welcome the community of Port Douglas to our brand-new concept K Hub store.

“Now things may look a little different to what you’d expect from a Kmart store today. We’re giving the store a ‘light touch’ makeover for now, so that we’re not inconveniencing the community with a long store closure.

“We want our customers to have easy access to the items they need, which is why we’re focusing on speed to market. But we have big plans to evolve the look and feel of this store over time.

The spokesperson said to start off with, the store will stock the most popular Kmart products across kids, home and clothing.

“A collection inspired for a smaller format store, with bigger convenience in mind.

“We’ll also be using our K Hub store as a collection point for online Target orders; giving customers easy access to two of our key Kmart Group brands.”

The spokesperson also confirmed that all Target team members have been offered the opportunity to join the “growing Kmart family”, with in-depth training and support offered.

Port Village Shopping Centre, where the K Hub will be located, has also advised that it is in the process of replacing the centre’s elevator, which is due for completion in early June.
