A large crocodile has been found dead in the Dickson Inlet in Port Douglas today.

Local tour operator, Lucas Agrums from the Lady Douglas River Cruise, came across the deceased crocodile on this Friday afternoon.

“It’s a huge shame, it’s a large animal, four-plus metres long," he said.

“Visitors aboard the Lady Douglas have been lucky enough to see him for many years. It’s possibly the dominant male of the Dickson Inlet for the past 15 years.”

The animal's cause of death is unknown, however, from the image provided the crocodile may have been tangled in the mooring a few days ago and only floated to the surface today.

The Department of Environment and Science has been notified.
