'New road in worse condition’ locals vent their anger over loose stones

Transport and Main Roads, Queensland has turned the other cheek regarding the parlous state of our main thoroughfare – Port Douglas Road.
Riddled with loose stones and ‘lineless’, the road is not what you want to welcome newcomers to the town, while residents have had to endure this lack of action and inconvenience for weeks.
A visibly disappointed Douglas Shire Mayor Michael Kerr said he is extremely disappointed with the handling of this project.
And he is equally frustrated with the response he received from Transport and Main Roads in response to his remonstrations.
“Transport and Main Roads Queensland has replied to me and advised that there is nothing wrong with the works on Port Douglas Road and that it is fit for purpose.
“Line marking is due to completed on December 6. I wholeheartedly agree with the numerous complaints that I have received. The road surface is anything but appropriate and appears in a worse condition than before.
“The noise for those living on it is horrendous and the amount of stone chips reported is appalling,” said Kerr.
Cyclists, who regularly ride their road bikes on Port Douglas Road, have remarked it’s worse than riding on a dirt road.
“Flying chips in multiple directions makes for an unpleasant experience. Those who go out on their bikes look for the best surfaces. This is unsuitable and leaves a poor reflection of the town,” said a cyclist who requested anonymity.
Kerr said he has been assured that the relevant work will be done on Monday.

As this is a State road, all complaints need to be passed to the Department of Main Roads or QLD State representative.
