The acclaimed Call of the Running Tide 2021 is calling out for volunteers for this event which runs from 18 to 27 September.

The Call of the Running Tide Environmental Sculpture and Multimedia Art festival (CRT) is a high quality curated event and an invitation by artists to engage meaningfully with the unique ecosystems from Rainforest to Reef in the Far North.

The sculptural and Multimedia works will also inform viewers of current local and global environmental threats. The inaugural CRT, held in in Douglas Shire September 2019, attracted 6,000 visitors to widespread acclaim.

CRT 2021 will be bigger and better than the previous event. Some 38 interstate, regional and local artists have created multiple sculptures and multimedia works which will be displayed in Rex Smeal Park, on the Flagstaff Hill walk, at the Northern end of Four Mile Beach and in Port Douglas Community Hall and grounds.

“Garden of Plastic” is a key event of Call of the Running Tide. Workshops for 7-12 year old children will be held between 10am and 2pm at the Mossman Shire Hall each day of the festival.

Children will be using bottle-tops to create a large installation. Selected panels from the installation will then create a large wall mural at the new Paws and Claws facility at Craiglie.

Volunteer roles

Call of the Running Tide is currently seeking volunteers to help in a number of ways:

• From 13 to 18 September for installation and from 28 to 29 September for demount of artworks;
• Providing support to the artists running the Garden of Plastic children’s workshops at the Mossman Shire Hall. Two volunteers are required each day (from 10am to 2pm) from the 18th to the 27th September;
• Offering information about artworks and assisting the public to experience Call of the Running Tide in Rex Smeal Park and the Port Douglas Community Hall.

Volunteers will also be asked to collect data about the number of visitors and record visitors’ comments.

Each shift is 3.5 hours (either 10am to 1.30pm or 1.30pm to 5 pm). There will always be at least two volunteers for each shift and you will be supported during your volunteering time by Call of the Running Tide team members.

All volunteers will receive a Call of the Running Tide T-shirt.

It is anticipated 5,000 local and regional Queenslanders and interstate visitors will attend Call of the Running Tide.
