With two victories over the Eagles, both local senior teams started off on the right foot this season in the FNQ Football League.

Friday 6.30 pm was the appointment scheduled for the 3rd Division at the Port Douglas Sporting Complex.

The evening started tough when the away side took the lead in the 15th minute. However, that happiness didn’t last long for Atherton, when D. Haughton tied the match at the 26th minute.

In an open match, there were plenty of attacks and both teams had chances to break score. Due to good stops by the goalkeepers or lack of accuracy by the strikers, the score was kept even until the 78 minute when Nacho Mascio stole the ball from the centre back, and coming up face-to-face with the keeper, put the ball near the right post in a clever finish at 2-1.

The Eagles were close to scoring many times, however, the Dragons held them off. An important triumph for the squad that is just taking their first steps in the league.

In the second match of the night, it was time for the 2nd Division´s squad to shine.

With a 9-0 score, any comment seems useless. From the begging to the end, Douglas United took the lead and control of the game.

A team that is used to play-and achieve-for important goals, did not disappoint and kept the firsts three points at home. Medina, Mackers, Gosling (3), Pycraft (2), Gualtieri and Cunningham were the scorers of the night.

Next Friday 16 April, The Dragons will play at home against James Cook University at 6.30pm for the 3rd Division and 8.30pm for 2nd Division.

As usual, you can enjoy good soccer with a F&B bar at Port Douglas Sport Complex.
