Motorists warned to ‘Back It Up’ as road floods

Anich’s Bridge near Mossman is flooded while water lapped at the edges of Barratt’s Creek Bridge near Daintree Village today as heavy rain lashed the region.
The Douglas Local Disaster Management Group has issued a warning to motorists to avoid floodwater after a vehicle was spotted on Council’s flood camera driving across a flooded Anich’s Bridge.
“If its flooded, back it up,” the group wrote on the Douglas Disaster Information Facebook page.
“This ute was spotted driving through floodwaters at Anichs Bridge, near Mossman.
“We strongly discourage reckless driving through floodwaters as it may be the worst decision you make.
“The decision to Back It Up is the bravest and smartest thing you can do.
“For any emergencies, please call the SES on 132 500.”
It comes as the Bureau of Meteorology has issued a Minor Flood Watch for the Far North for rivers between Cooktown and Ingham, including the Mossman and Daintree rivers.
“Minor to moderate flooding is likely from Tuesday” the Bureau warns.
“Further heavy rainfall associated with a coastal trough is forecast across the Flood Watch area over the next few days.
“Many catchments within the Flood Watch area are now saturated and will therefore respond relatively quickly to further rainfall.”
Localised flooding and disruption to transport routes are likely within the Flood Watch area.
