Heavy rain causes landslides on major roads

WEATHER

UPDATE:
After several hours both the Captain Cook Highway and the Rex Ranger were cleared following landslips on Tuesday.
As rain continues to fall in the Far North, police have warned they expect road conditions to continue to change throughout the day.
EARLIER:
The heavy rain has caused traffic chaos across the region, following landslips on both major roads in and out of the Douglas Shire.
Delays are once again expected on the Captain Cook Highway, which has been reduced to one lane at Oak Beach, south of Port Douglas, due to a large fallen boulder on the road.
Motorists are urged to proceed with caution.
Meanwhile a major landslip has also occurred on the Rex Range between Mossman and Mount Molloy forcing the road to close.
The Mareeba Shire Council expects the road to reopen at approximately 6:00pm today.
Heavy rain is set to continue across the region with a Flood Watch still current for the Mossman and Daintree River catchments.
Further heavy rainfall associated with a coastal trough is forecast across the Flood Watch area between Cooktown and Ingham over the next few days.
The heaviest rainfall is expected close to the coast and ranges.
Douglas Shire Council is providing sand and sandbags to residents which are now available at:
- Wonga - Wonga RFS/SES shed.
- Diwan - SES Local Headquarters, Tea Tree Road Diwan.
- Daintree village - Daintree Village RFS/SES shed.
- Port Douglas - Crocs AFL carpark, access via Wharf Street.
- Mossman - Mossman SES shed at the rear of Council’s Administration Building in Mossman, access via Front Street.
