The Salvation Army’s Kubirri Aged Care Centre in Mossman has recently opened welcoming its first residents through the doors of the newly completed facility.

The new centre has been over 20 years in the making with many passionate community members strongly campaigning for appropriate aged care services in Mossman for many years.

The Salvation Army has brought that vision to life with the centre now in full operation, welcoming any enquiries about aged care services for you or a loved one.

The centre was officially opened with traditional landowners on-site. Alfred Diamond and his son Santos Diamond conducted a Welcome to Country with the Salvos Divisional Commander for Queensland, Lieutenant-Colonel David Godkin on hand to represent and share a Prayer of Dedication. 

Salvation Army’s Major Steven O’Neill said the local Council, the Queensland Government, the Mossman Nursing Association, and many community members have played an integral part in bringing Kubirri Aged Care Centre to life.

“Kubirri Aged Care Centre is the next step in the evolution of The Salvation Army Aged Care’s residential aged care centres,” he said.

“We are pleased to have worked closely with the community, in particular Douglas Shire Council who have invested heavily in the project and the Mossman District Nursing Committee.”

Douglas Shire Council invested significantly in the project, including funding a business case, securing more than $500,000 funding for enabling infrastructure, and waiving around $250,000 worth of infrastructure fees. The Queensland Government also provided $544,000 towards infrastructure and works. 

In February 2018, The Salvation Army Aged Care also successfully secured $3.4 million in funding from the Regional Jobs and Investment Package, to assist with the construction.

Salvos Major Ric Ellis said The Salvation Army Aged Care team worked with local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders throughout the construction and hiring processes and look forward to welcoming the elderly from all communities as residents at the Centre.

“With a beautiful setting near mountains and farmland, and being close to Mossman Town centre, The Salvation Army Aged Care is excited to open Kubirri Aged Care Centre in service to the local community,” Major Ellis said.
