The Douglas Shire’s annual Mayor’s Christmas Appeal has begun and for Mayor Michael Kerr’s first Appeal it will be like no other.

Christmas can already be a tough time for many and this year more people than ever are feeling the pinch.

Leading one of the hardest-hit regions amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Mayor Kerr has teamed up with local community organisations for the 2020 Mayor’s Christmas Appeal, calling on the region to dig deep for struggling families across the Douglas Shire.

“We anticipate a huge demand for help this Christmas,” he said.

“Without JobKeeper, more than 800 jobs are estimated to be lost from our region this quarter and now, more than ever, some families will be feeling the pinch.

“If you are sitting fairly secure, I am asking you to join the Mayor’s Christmas Appeal by donating money to go towards food hampers.

“Hampers provide enough food and cheer for a decent Christmas breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as basic staples to ensure there is enough to go round over the Christmas period.”

All money raised goes directly towards food hampers that will be provided for eligible residents of the Douglas Shire.

Council is working with Mossman Support Services, Quicksilver, Port Douglas Neighbourhood Centre, Goobidi Home care services, Goobidi Bamanga Community Advancement Cooperative Society and the Christian mission fellowship international to assist and launch the appeal.

A new online donation portal will make it easier for people to donate money to the appeal and donations of $2 or more are tax deductible.

Council will also have collection points around the shire from mid-November and will be seeking un-opened children’s presents and toys for kids of all ages, as well as pet food and adult luxury items.
