The stunning Four Mile Beach played backdrop to the inaugural Sandy Sticks and Spokes event over the weekend which saw keen hockey players and bike riders face off.

The Douglas Hockey Association and the Port Douglas Mountain Bike Club joined forces to put on two days of beach hockey and racing.

Event organiser, Angie Johnson, said the event was a great success with eight teams competing on Saturday in the Junior hockey and eight teams on the Sunday in the adults.

41 riders also jumped on their bikes for the Beach Bike Sprint race along Four Mile Beach to claim the title of King and Queen of the beach.

Those titles went to Kaito Levieille with a time of 13.36 and Lynn Butters with a time of 17.21.

“The junior hockey champions were the Deadly Science team from Groote Eylandt and the runners up were Wonga Worriers,” Ms Johnson said.

“The Champions for the adults was taken out by Angel Construction Team with the runners up Douglas Hockey. Thanks to Sailaway, LiveLife Pharmacy, Elite 818, Team Kind, The Port Outriggers and the Beachcombers who fought hard to win the first title.

“Port Douglas has the only Beach Hockey Pitch in the country and this the first event of its kind. We look forward to next year being bigger and better and hopefully in the future, we can get out southern states over for an interstate competition with the ultimate goal being an international event played here in Port Douglas,” Ms Johnson said.
