Farewell Kara: Turtle set for release from Four Mile Beach

Kara the adult green turtle is being released back into the ocean from Four Mile Beach in Port Douglas on Saturday 5 September.
Volunteers from the Cairns Turtle Rehabilitation Centre (CTRC) who have cared for the turtle will do the honours during a community fun day full of activities, kicking off tomorrow from 10:00am at Four Mile Beach Park.
Jennie Gilbert, co-founder of CTRC and JCU turtle researcher, said Kara the turtle has been in rehab for the last 18 months.
“She was found stuck in mud, emaciated and covered in barnacles from floating for a lengthy period, probably due to inaction, causing her to float on the surface,” she said.
Kara has now recovered and is ready to make her way home to the sea and the community is invited to come and witness the release and farewell Kara.
CTRC volunteers have organised a community fun day to accompany the release.
“People can get involved by turning up and being involved in a beach clean-up, sandcastle building competition, and the turtle release, and show their support for the plight of turtles,” Ms Gilbert said.
