To raise the awareness of domestic violence Mossman residents may have noticed a splash of red in town with two new benches installed as part of the Red Bench Project.

Douglas Shire Mayor Michael Kerr said the aim of project, initiated by the Red Rose Foundation, was to install red benches in public locations throughout Queensland to raise awareness of domestic violence.

“We have one red bench outside Council Chambers and another outside Mossman Elders Justice Group’s office on Front Street,” he said.

“Each bench delivers a simple message on a plaque, ‘Change the ending: let’s stop domestic violence’."

Shelly Richards, Female Coordinator Domestic family Violence from Mossman Elders Justice Group, organised the red bench outside their office.

“The benches are a permanent reminder that domestic violence occurs within all of our communities.”

“They provide an opportunity for this important issue to remain visible,” Shelly said.

The Red Rose Foundation plans to have at least one Red Bench in all 77 local government areas in Queensland and Douglas Shire Mayor Michael Kerr was happy to support the project with the purchase of two red benches.

“I hope the benches will encourage conversations about this important social issue,” Mayor Kerr said.
