A 65-year-old man, who sustained serious leg injuries on Saturday after a hang gliding accident near Wangetti, is recovering in Cairns Hospital in a stable condition.

Paramedics were called to the Rex lookout on the Captain Cook Highway at 12:08pm on Saturday after the experienced hang glider reportedly suffered an equipment malfunction on take-off.

The Rescue 510 helicopter attended the scene, forced to land on the highway, delaying traffic for over an hour.

The man was airlifted to Cairns Base Hospital in a stable condition. It is believed he suffered a broken leg.

The Cairns Hang Gliding Club issued a statement on social media shortly after to notify members.

“One of our very experienced pilots had an accident on launch today at the Rex lookout.

“He is ok, recovering in hospital with an injury to his leg.

“We wish our pilot a speedy recovery.”
