Port outriggers hit the beach for Marlin Coast Relay Challenge

If you are looking for a bit of action on the water this weekend why not venture down to the beaches and check out the 13th annual Marlin Coast Relay Challenge, hosted by the Port Douglas Outrigger Canoe Club.

This iconic long-distance race will feature 120 paddlers from around Queensland tackling the 45km race in single, double, 3-man or 6-man canoes and surf skies.

With the forecast of strong south-easterly winds, Race Director, Ingrid Juchem, said it should make for, “a fast race with good surfing opportunities for the experienced paddler,” and “some potentially challenging conditions for those tackling their first year.”

“We are excited to host one of the premier events on the AOCRA’s (Australian Outrigger Canoe Association) calendar and look forward to welcoming our fellow Queensland competitors to enjoy one of the most beautiful coastlines in our state.”

“We can’t wait to see how they tackle the conditions and no doubt it will provide spectators with some exciting race finishes. Wishing all competitors, the best of luck,” she said.

Race Details:

The race will kick off at 10:15am, Saturday 17 October 2020

  • 1st leg at Yorkeys Knob (Esplanade) to Ellis Beach
  • 2nd leg from Ellis Beach to Wangetti
  • 3rd leg from Wangetti to Oak Beach (arrive approx. 1.30pm)
  • 4th leg from Oak Beach to the southern end of Four Mile (approx. 3pm)

Tip: A good way to view the race is from the top of Rex lookout. Fm there you will be able to see the end of the second leg and the start of the third.
