Stephen Goulmy, the United Australia Party (UAP), who is running for Cook in tomorrow’s Queensland election, says he believes in good appropriate education for all and that everyone needs a meaningful job.

And the member of Clive Palmer’s party, Goulmy was approached by the UAP to run in a seat for the election.

“I chose Cook because it is an area I love and want to be a part of its future. It doesn't take long to see the absolute abhorrent mess the current and preceding governments have made of the electorate.

“I love the relaxed atmosphere of Port Douglas, the frontier feeling of Cooktown and the beauty of the world heritage areas, not to mention the vast areas of the Cape,” he said.

Goulmy, who has been in the building and civil construction industry for 40 years, concedes he is not from this area.

“I know I'm not from the area. But I see that as a positive, I can bring a fresh approach and some clear ideas of a better path forward. I believe we all need respect, but that's something the current government is sorely lacking.

“I believe in a solid hand up, with the required support. It doesn't matter if you are in Mossman or Mapoon, everyone deserves the same support.

“I want to get around and talk to not only community representatives but anyone who wants to talk. I want to get to all the schools, hospitals, etc and find out what everyone needs to help them in the work and private lives,” said Goulmy.

Mr Goulmy said he is also in support of reopening the Mossman maternity ward without delay saying, “Far North Queensland is not a third world country.”

“My plan is to extend and refurbish this hospital into a modern facility fit for the community needs both now and into the future,” he said.

Eight candidates are vying for the seat of Cook: Independent Yodie Batzke, LNP’s Nipper Brown, NQ First’s Desmond Tayley, One Nation’s Brett (Beaver) Neal, KAP’s Tanika Parker, incumbent Labor’s Cynthia Lui, the Greens’ Deby Ruddell, and UAP’s Stephen Goulmy.
