The Mossman Tennis Courts will officially re-open on Saturday 14 November following major upgrades.

To celebrate, the Mossman Squash and Tennis Club is holding come and try open days over the next two weekends and is inviting everyone, no matter ability, to come and try out the new courts.

Open day sessions will run from 8:00am to 10:00am and 5:00pm to 7:00pm on the 14th 15th, 20th and 21st November. Equipment is provided.

The courts, located at the Mossman State School, are over 30 years old and were severely run down, becoming dangerous to play on.

In January, Cook MP Cynthia Lui announced the school would receive a $141,000 to upgrade the courts, which would also be available for the wider community to use, as part of an initiative between Tennis Queensland and the Department of Education.

President of the Mossman Squash and Tennis Club, Alan Lane, said the grant has allowed for the courts to be completely rebuilt with a soft new playing surface, improved drainage, new fencing, and new lighting.

An additional grant from the Gambling Community Benefit Fund saw covered seating added for spectators.

“The old hard courts were in very poor condition,” Mr Lane said.

“The new ones have a completely different surface with synthetic grass courts, which is softer to play on and better on the body."

Mr Lane said the new lighting system also greatly improves the usability of the courts allowing for night play.

“It means that more people will be able to play, with a clean, well lit, safe area.

“It really does look quite spectacular and it brightens up the whole area.”

Mr Lane encouraged everyone to come and try the courts - which are open to the public - out for yourself.

“Anyone can come down and have a hit, make a family day of it.”

The Club also holds competitions, social games, and coaching programs for all ages.

“For the first time now we are running adult social tennis on Tuesday and Wednesday nights under the new lights.

“We have fun competitions, like parent-child comps, and we also have serious club championship events and club matches against other clubs.

“And we are offering discounted club membership for November and December,” Mr Lane said.
