Shire residents invited to lay wreaths for Remembrance Day

Douglas Shire residents have been presented with an opportunity to lay a wreath at cenotaphs in Mossman and Port Douglas to mark Remembrance Day on Wednesday.
Douglas Shire Council and Mossman RSL will fly their flags half-mast to commemorate the occasion on November 11.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the Mossman RSL sub branch made a decision to hold a small-scale Remembrance Day Service to protect vulnerable veterans.
Douglas Shire Mayor Michael Kerr, who will lay a wreath on the day, said it was an important day to pause and reflect.
“We will reflect on the lives of all of those lost to the horrors of war,” he said.
“With more than 220 local soldiers enlisted in World War One, including the 41 who died on the battlefield, it is important we remember the sacrifice they made to create a better future.
“From soldiers serving in the trenches in Gallipoli more than a century ago, to more recent desert warfare in Afghanistan, we thank them for giving us the opportunity to live freely in this beautiful Shire,” said Kerr.
Remembrance Day is the anniversary of the Armistice that ended fighting with Germany in World War I.
People around the world observe one minute’s silence at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month because the Armistice came into effect then.
This year marks the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II.
It’s an important time to pause and reflect on the important role Australia played in that war. Since World War I, Australia has been called on many times to serve in wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping and humanitarian operations.
Almost two million men and women have worn with pride the uniforms of the Royal Australian Navy, Australian Army and Royal Australian Air Force. Tragically, over 102,000 names are listed on the Roll of Honour at the Australian War Memorial.
Remembrance Day is a time for Australians to unite in solemn respect and remembrance for those who served and died.
