The Port Douglas Carnivale 2020 has become the latest casualty in the coronavirus pandemic, with Council officially confirming the towns biggest party will be postponed and will not go ahead in May as planned.

The announcement is in line with recommendations from the Federal Government on non-essential mass gatherings.

Douglas Shire Council will investigate the possibility of holding aspects of the festival, as part of its economic recovery to the COVID-19 pandemic at a future date.

As the COVID-19 pandemic is a rapidly evolving situation, Council will continually monitor the latest health advice and review the circumstances before a public announcement about a future date.

Council’s Chief Executive Officer Mark Stoermer said the health of Carnivale artists, patrons and community is paramount.

“While this decision will be disappointing for a whole range of people, Council staff have received very clear health advice from the federal and state authorities,” he said.

“This decision has not been made lightly. We thank everyone for their support and encourage people to remain calm and listen to the health advice during these exceptional circumstances.

“While there have been no COVID-19 detections in our health district, Council is taking a precautionary approach and following advice from the state and federal authorities.”

Any pre-purchased tickets to the Tropic Rock Concert will be refunded.
