The North Queensland Muddies 2nd Grade side have been crowned the 2019/20 Cricket Far North one-day premiers following their successes at the weekend.

On Saturday, they won their semi-final against Mareeba at Borzi Park in Mareeba and then on Sunday defeated Rovers at Griffith Park in Cairns in the final.

The Muddies batted first in the semi-final and finished on 5/162 from their 40 overs. They then bowled Mareeba out for 116.

And in the final, they dismissed the Rovers for 86 after 33 overs and in reply, were 7/87, giving them an easy victory. This came despite Muddies being the underdogs.

In the semi-final, Luke Twomey (26), Randal Smith (39 not out) and Ryan Stanaway (34) made useful contributions. Adam Lucas was the pick of the bowlers taking 3/18 from eight overs.

In the final, Ethan McCullough was the pick of the batsmen scoring 29, while the bowling honours went to Ben Shrimpton with an impressive 6/18 from eight overs.

The competition is played under the Cricket Far North (CFN) Association and has teams from Innisfail/Mission Beach up to the Douglas Shire and inland to Mareeba and Atherton.

The one-day competition was heavily rain affected this season and the Muddies ended third on the ladder making them underdogs to win the premiership.

With the one-day competition complete, the T20 matches start with two games at home this weekend. The T20 competition will finish towards the end of March.
