McKeown ready to go as councillor position looks set

Mossman man Peter McKeown, who is almost certain to secure a seat in council chambers with more than 70 per cent of the councillor vote counted, said he is excited and eager to get started when the official results come in.
“We need to deal with the coronavirus situation first and see what we can do for the Shire because there are a lot of people hurting at the moment,” he said.
Mr McKeown also had the better expenditure of rates and council finances and the beautification of the shire on his list of priorities for his term in Council after the current crisis is dealt with.

He added he believed it was his business experience along with his promise to get back to the basics of council along with his want to make sure people will get value for their rates, that secured his position.
“It feels good that a majority of people had confidence that I can do what I said I would do.
“It looks like it will be a good mix of people on Council now so I’ll be very happy to work with them.”
It will be a case of second time lucky for Mr McKeown who narrowly missed out on a Council position during the 2016 election.
“I had a good feeling this time around, I think I was a lot more prepared than last time,” he said.
Mr McKeown is sitting on 3405 votes or 14.74 per cent, the second-highest number of votes received behind Lisa Scomazzon.
Coming in next is Roy Zammataro, looking very likely to return to office for a second term with 3055 votes or 13.23 per cent.
Rounding out the top four is incumbent Abigail Noli who has 2834 votes or 12.27 per cent.
Ms Noli’s position is less certain sitting on a knifes-edge with candidate Natalie Johnson only 71 votes behind her, with a small portion of postal votes left to be counted.
