Police have intercepted three Kowanyama men carrying a large quantity of alcohol in a restricted zone in Cape York.

A Toyota Landcruiser bound for Kowanyama was intercepted on Kowanyama Pormpuraaw Road shortly before 11:00pm on 7 June.

Officers conducted a search of the four-wheel-drive allegedly uncovering a significant quantity of spirits, wine and alcopops.

It is further alleged that the driver of the car was unlicensed. The alcohol was seized, and the four-wheel-drive was impounded.

Kowanyama is one of many remote communities in Cape York were strict alcohol restrictions apply.

Officer in Charge of the Kowanyama Police Station, Acting Senior Sergeant Dave McCarthy said this significant amount of alcohol could have resulted in serious consequences for the community.

“It is extremely disappointing to see a quantity of alcohol this large headed for our community given residents have recently been approved to purchase small quantities of alcohol for the first time in 18 years,” said Acting Senior Sergeant McCarthy.

“Had this amount of alcohol made it into our community, it would’ve had serious consequences for the township impacting on the social harmony and well-being of our residents.”

The Kowanyama men aged 34, 35 and 37 were each charged with possession of liquor in a restricted area. The 35-year-old man was further charged with unlicensed driving.

They are all scheduled to appear in Kowanyama Magistrates Court on 16 July.
