Council’s commitment to ecotourism

DESTINATION ACCREDITATION PROGRAM



After becoming Australia’s first ECO certified destination last year, the Douglas Shire will continue to work closely with Ecotourism Australia.

And Douglas Shire Mayor Michael Kerr said he had met with Ecotourism Australia CEO Rod Hillman to reaffirm Council’s commitment to the eco destination accreditation program.

It is well known that our two World Heritage listed wonders, through their unique appeal and natural beauty, draw about 1.2 million visitors to the region every year, making it incumbent on Council to ensure they are protected and preserved for future generations.

“Council is leading this cause on the national stage by actively advocating for an environmentally-friendly energy solution for residents and business owners in the Daintree Rainforest,” said Kerr.

The Douglas Shire destination received a ‘Best of Communities and Culture’ award at 2020 Sustainable Destination Awards in ITB Berlin earlier this year.

The award recognises the location’s efforts in celebrating indigenous experiences and creating local jobs through the Mossman Gorge Centre.

In October last year, Newsport reported that the shire had been awarded a place in the prestigious 2019 Sustainable Destinations Top 100 list with the help of Ecotourism Australia’s ECO Destination Certification program.
