Study to better determine Douglas storm tide risks
STORM TIDE RISK
Douglas Shire neighbourhoods will have a better understanding of how potential storm tides could impact them after expert coastal engineers undertake a new study.
Douglas Shire Council has appointed JBA Pacific Scientists and Engineers Pty Ltd to complete the research after securing $180,480 through the Queensland Government’s Innovation and Improvement Fund.
Douglas Shire Mayor Michael Kerr said the storm tide inundation study would categorise coastline types and then apply three different storm tide models to determine the most appropriate model for that area.
“For example, those wishing to build a house or renovate a property along the coastline will have a greater understanding about the potential risk of storm tide,” Cr Kerr said.
“The study will provide greater certainty for town planners and developers modelling extreme events.
“This research project will uncover more precise data that better informs the community about potential impacts in suburbs by the sea.”
Queensland Treasurer and Planning Minister Cameron Dick said the Innovation and Improvement Fund has helped councils across the state improve their planning systems.
“Efficient and improved planning systems to enable appropriate development will be even more vital as we move forward with our economic recovery,” Mr Dick said.
“We know there will be tough times ahead for the Queensland economy, and that’s why we are delivering a comprehensive economic recovery plan that focuses on creating jobs and getting Queenslanders back to work."
The study will include a peer review component and it is anticipated to be completed by the end of this year.
