A Mossman police sergeant has sustained a broken nose after allegedly being assaulted in Port Douglas over the weekend. 

Mossman detectives charged a 48-year-old Port Douglas man after he allegedly assaulted the police officer as well as a bar manager at a Macrossan Street licenced premises around midnight on Friday, 17 July.

It will be alleged that the man was asked to leave by the manager due to disruptive behaviour inside the establishment.

The man allegedly grabbed the manager by his collar and assaulted him. After being evicted from the premises, he damaged a pot plant outside.

Port Douglas Station Officer-in-Charge, Sergeant Damian Meadows, said police were called to the establishment and located the man.

“Police have arrested the offender at which point he has struck one of the officers, breaking his nose,” he said.

“That kind of behaviour will not be tolerated by police.”

The man was taken into custody and later charged with common assault, wilful damage, committing a public nuisance inside a licensed premise, serious assault of a police officer, obstructing police, and contravening a requirement.

The bar manager didn’t sustain any serious injuries while the male sergeant was taken to hospital for treatment of a broken nose.

The alleged offender is scheduled to appear in Mossman Magistrates Court on 28 August.
