Luxury resort planned for Port Douglas

Douglas Shire Mayor Michael Kerr has been quick to express his delight following reports that an exclusive $300 million luxury resort will be developed.
As part of the arrangement, the Melbourne based developer Chiodo Corp have signed a hotel management deal with Accor.
It will be built on the former Havana resort project between Oaks Hotels and Resorts and the Mirage Country Club. In 2005, the Havana project did not get off the ground as the developers were unable to raise the required $132 million.
The development is set to inject hundreds of thousands of dollars into the struggling town which has been hit hard by the loss of tourists due to the coronavirus crisis, according to a report in the Cairns Post.
“The finished product will include rooftop bars, cafes, a signature chef restaurant, swimming pools, a day spa and business conference and wedding facilities. It will also have a 136-space basement carpark.”
The proposed 253-room is a hotel management deal with Accor. It will also be a part of Fairmount Hotels and Resorts, a world-wide brand.
A Council spokesperson said “nothing development wise has been submitted to Council yet.
“As this is a hotel management deal with Accor, hotel management agreements don’t require Council approval.”
Mayor Kerr said the hotel, which could be open within three years, will be perfect timing and this complements my confidence and excitement.
“This is something special. It falls within a significant brand and this is something to look forward to. This is great news for Port Douglas,” said Kerr.
