Local businesses are continuing to call on the public to do it in Douglas as part of the Buy Douglas: Build Douglas campaign and one example which is benefitting is Grant Street Kitchen.

Grant Street Kitchen is a little artisan bakery located in the heart of Port Douglas. Co-owner Scott leads the small team that make everything from scratch.

“We bake fresh artisan bread, hand rolled pastries, pies and sausage rolls. We make gourmet rolls, offer dine in dishes, delicious smoothies and pour small batch roasted coffee. All our products can be enjoyed in our lovely street side terrace or are available to take away,” he said.

Like everyone, Grant Street Kitchen felt the pinch with COVID 19, but the team’s focus has been to keep the doors open for the community.

“To help our business cope with the reduction of trade due to the COVID 19 restrictions and border closures, we adapted our range to include ready-made meals and more family sized options.

“These were to cater for those who could no longer go out for a meal due to the restaurant closures. We are delighted to see the restaurants in town being able to re-open, and we have decided to keep many of these new products on our shelves as they have become popular with the locals,” said Scott.

“We were also fortunate enough to be offered some space at Scomozzans Farm where we now stock a fridge with our baked pies, sausage rolls, family quiches and lasagne.

“We deliver fresh bread and pastries to their shop every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.

“This has given us the opportunity to showcase our products to people living in the northern suburbs of Newell Beach, Wonga Beach and Daintree who may not be regular visitors to Port Douglas.

Co-owner Alice says they have appreciated being able to continue to bake for the community throughout these crazy times.

“Without the support for our community we would not have survived and we are very grateful to be part of such a kind, strong and supportive community. We also practice this, choosing to buy local and use local trades. Every dollar spent in our community helps.

“Our doors are open seven days a week 6am-3pm.”
