Local radio personality Gary ‘Gazza’ McIlroy is on a mission to bring our Cassowary Coast neighbours to the Douglas Shire in an effort to boost the local economy.

The popular Port Douglas-based Fab FM presenter, known for the ‘Gazza Challenge’, plans to head south next month with a swag of holiday specials to be won.

Gazza will conduct a number of challenges, each providing an opportunity for Cassowary Coast locals to win holiday prizes supplied by Douglas Shire businesses and receive information about special holiday deals exclusive to Cassowary Coast residents and their families.

The region, between Babinda and Cardwell, is a close neighbour to the Douglas Shire and has been a popular tourist destination for both short stays and extended visits.

Gazza said the collaboration with the Douglas Shire Council is hoped to entice much needed regional travellers to the region.

“Douglas Shire businesses owners who are keen to make a difference are invited to get involved by providing information on their products and services, potential prizes and special deals for Cassowary Coast residents,” Gazza said.

“When I was working down there, the ‘Gazza Challenge’ was particularly popular among locals and I want to use that familiarity with the residents to entice them to ‘Do It In Douglas’.

“I will be in touch with local businesses in Port Douglas, Mossman and the Daintree over the next few weeks to drum up support.”

Douglas Shire Mayor Michael Kerr said the ‘Gazza Douglas Challenge’ was a great example of local businesses working together to add resilience to the economy.

“Through the Buy Douglas: Build Douglas campaign we have seen some really fantastic collaboration between businesses and this initiative shows that spirit is continuing,” he said.

Gazza will conduct the challenges on 15 and 16 August at the following locations:

SATURDAY 15 AUGUST

Mission Beach – 10:00am
Tully – 12:00pm
Cardwell – 3:00pm

SUNDAY 16 AUGUST

Innisfail – 11:00am
Babinda – 2:00pm
