The Douglas Dragons football team went on the rampage in their opening game of the season when they thrashed Leichhardt 5-0 in their first game back following Covid-19.

It was a dream start for the local team who have won three successive premierships in the FNQ Football Second Division.

Daniel Ferrero scored the first goal in the 39th minute. Adriano Gualtieri (56th), Xavier Aranda (70th), Chris Baker (85th) and Nathan Borzi (87th) hit the back of the net after the break.

“I am extremely happy with this performance in what was a fast moving game. They tried to shut us down, but we countered that.

“We were rusty at the start and this was to be expected. But the second half showed what we can produce,” said coach Andrew Robinson.

The Dragons have a bye this weekend and the following weekend are away to the formidable Atherton Eagles, who they beat in extra time in last year’s final.

“This is going to be challenging and a real test. Atherton has a good side and we can expect a tough encounter,” said Robinson.
