The Douglas United Football Club is calling for junior soccer lovers to get involved when they host a ‘Come and Try’ day for four to nine-year-olds on Sunday 2 August at the Cassowary Park Grounds in Cassowary from 10:00am.

New players are encouraged to give it a try during a fun-filled morning with an inflatable field, games and activities, and an appearance from Kel’s Wacky Wonders.

Following the ‘Come and Try’ day, squirts training sessions will kick off on Thursday 6 August from 4:00pm to 5:00pm and are a great way to get kids into sport in a safe fun environment while meeting other children and learning new skills.

For those a little older there is still an opportunity to join the club this season with Treasurer Andrew Robinson saying both new junior and senior players are welcome.

“Anyone who still wants to get involved this season can get in contact via our Facebook page,” he said.

Mr Robinson said despite a late start to the season the club has a strong junior and senior outfit thanks to a number of excellent players and volunteers.

Recently the club’s juniors were presented with their 2020 club playing and training kits during a ceremony at the Cassowary grounds to thank the sponsors who have made this year possible including the Mossman Bowls Club, Rattle n Hum, Marano's Fuel, Paddy's Irish Bar, N17, and Beach Harvest.

Club President Darren Case said the sponsors have been integral to the entire club, helping to provide uniforms and equipment.

“We are an entirely volunteer-based club, so without the sponsorship, we would struggle to exist,” he said.

“It’s critical and in this time when money is short, hats off even more to the sponsors who have come on board, the support has been awesome.”
