Celebrating Aussie Day in the Douglas Shire
AUSTRALIA DAY
The Australia Day weekend is upon us and there is no shortage of events and activities in the Shire for residents and visitors to enjoy.
A Big BBQ at Hemingway’s
Hemingway’s Brewery Port Douglas is hosting an Australia Day Big Lamb BBQ on Sunday from 12:00pm.
DJ Bart will entertain the crowds and there will be cold beer on tap, craft gins and wines and lots and lots of lamb.
Free BBQ Breakfast and civic ceremonies
Douglas Shire Council is hosting a free BBQ breakfast on Sunday morning from 7:30am at the Port Douglas Community Hall.
The Free beaky will be followed by a citizenship ceremony that will see 28 new citizens become Australians at 9:30am.
Then at 10:00am the most outstanding residents from across the Shire will be recognised in the Australia Day Awards.
Council invites everyone to come and grab some free breakfast and celebrate the award winners and welcome the new citizens.
Play a game of Golf
The Mossman Golf Club is hosting an Australia Day Ambrose Event. There will be a 12:30pm Shot Gun start followed by BBQ, members club draw, and a meat tray raffle.
There is a dress to impress Australia Day theme and everyone is welcome to join.
Hit up a stage show
On Both Saturday and Sunday, the Clink Theatre in Port Douglas is presenting the Young Performers Edition of the Wizard of Oz.
Twenty-three children aged between 8 and 16 years will bring the classic musical to life.
Shows will run at 1:00pm, 3:00pm, and 5:00pm.
Do it for the animals
The Port Douglas Yacht Club is holding an Animal Rescue & Australian Fires Fundraiser on Sunday kicking off at 3:00pm.
The event will feature five local musicians playing throughout the afternoon and evening including Area13, Portamento Belle Duo, Sea Change Due, Elliot D Music, and Papa’s Gun.
There will be a gold coin entry fee as well as raffles, children’s face painting, henna hand drawings, a bake sale, and $1 from every beer sold will be donated to the cause.
All money raised will go to Animals Australia and WIRES (Wildlife Information, Rescue and Education Service) to help animals in bushfires affected areas.
Help out a mate
What’s more Australian than spending Australia Day helping out a mate?
The Mates Helping Mates Bushfire Appeal is on Sunday kicking off from 12:00pm at the Port Douglas Sporting Ground.
A group of locals, sports clubs, and business have rallied together to put on this family fun-filled day all in the name of raising money for the bushfire victims.
The day will feature a fun 20/20 cricket tournament, a Lamington eating contest, a thong tossing competition, a three-legged race, a wheelbarrow race, an egg and spoon race, and a sausage sizzle.
It is just a cold coin donation to join in the fun.
There will also be raffles, a silent auction, and a community garage sale on the day.
Stay Cool
If none of these events tickle your fence you could also cool off in one of the many creeks in the area, hit some stumps at the beach, cook a snag on the BBQ, or knock a few cold ones back at the pub. And if the heat is getting too much for you, you can hit up the air-coned venues of Rattle N Hum, Paddy’s Irish Bar or N17 just to name a few.
