Election fever starts to build
LOCAL GOVERNMENT ELECTION
Election fever is starting to mount as the Douglas Shire prepares for the local government election in just over a month on 28 March.
Already candidate posters have begun to appear on the sidewalks and other areas and this is expected to increase following the notice of the election on 22 February.
The important electoral roll closes on Friday 28 February and candidate nominations on 3 March.
To date, the following have announced they will be running for one of the four Councillor positions: Lisa Scomazzon, Kym Rowley, Peter McKeown, Cr Abigail Noli, Steve Cruickshank, Bruce Clarke, Natalie Johnson and Cr Roy Zammataro.
At this stage, Cr David Carey has given no indication whether he will be seeking re-election.
On the Mayoral front, incumbent Julia Leu, first elected in 2014 following de-amalgamation, is being challenged by Cr Michael Kerr.
Two election forums have been confirmed. The Douglas Shire Ratepayers’ Association will host a forum at the Mossman Bowls Club on Saturday 7 March from 2-4pm and the Daintree Marketing Cooperative will follow suit two dates later at the Daintree Heritage Lodge at 6pm.
