Christmas hampers full of goodies were rolled out across the Douglas Shire this week to bring a little extra cheer to those in need this festive season.

Over 100 hampers were distributed to families who applied thanks to the 2020 Mayor’s Christmas appeal which raised over $10,000.

The hampers will provide enough food and cheer for a decent Christmas breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as basic staples to ensure there is enough to go round over the festive period.

Jabalbina Yalanji Aboriginal Corporation packed and delivered the hampers around the region earlier this week.

Jabalbina Ranger, Kallum Clarke, said the hampers would mean families in need will have one less thing to worry about.

“And will hopefully be able to enjoy Christmas that little bit more,” he said.

“Jabalbina as an organisation is all about giving back and helping promote growth and safety in the community, so it’s great that we get to do this, it helps to enrich our spirits as well, to know that we are giving back.”

Douglas Shire Mayor Michael Kerr said he was blown away by the Christmas spirit shown by the community in donating the money required to make the hampers possible.

“I am so blown away by the immense generosity from the community who gave us the money needed to ensure everyone in the Shire, no matter where they are situated financially, can have a wonderful Christmas day,” he said.

“That is what Christmas is all about.”
