UPDATE:

The Captain Cook Highway has been fully reopened.

EARLIER:

The Captain Cook Highway, just north of the Port Douglas turn-off has been closed following a serious multi-vehicle crash.

Multiple emergency crews including the rescue helicopter and critical care paramedics were called to the scene at 3.26pm.

A Queensland Ambulance Services spokesperson said a woman in her 50s sustained head and chest injuries and is being airlifted to Cairns Hospital in a serious condition.

Five other patients, three men in their 70s, a woman in her 70s and a man in his 60s, sustained non critical injuries including head and shoulder injuries and back and neck pain and were transported by road to Mossman Hospital.

The highway is currently closed to all traffic in both directions and long queues have banked up for kilometres.

Queensland Police have advised people to avoid the area.
