A 40-year-old Mowbray woman was airlifted to Townsville in a serious condition on Sunday.

A 40-year-old Mowbray woman remains in a serious condition after she was found lying on Connolly Road with head injuries following an electric scooter incident on Sunday.

Paramedics and the rescue helicopter were called to Mowbray around 6:00am yesterday.

Port Douglas Police Sergeant, Damian Meadows, said the woman was located on the roadway with serious head injuries after falling from the electric scooter. 

She was transported by rescue helicopter to Townsville Hospital where she remains.

Sergeant Meadows said it was a timely reminder to be careful on the roads and he urged people to not underestimate the speed electric scooters can get to.

The Forensic Crash Unit are investigating the incident.

It is understood that the woman was not wearing a helmet at the time.
