Mossman street festival returns after 13-year hiatus
CHRISTMAS 2020
Christmas 2020 will see the return of the popular street festival in Mossman which has experienced a 13-year hiatus.
It starts at 6pm on Friday on Front Street.
The Douglas Chamber of Commerce has played a leading role along with the Douglas Shire Council and local traders.
Explaining the event’s revival, Karen Smith-Marron, Secretary for the Douglas Chamber of Commerce, said there was community support for the Mossman Street Party of old to return.
“Paul Smyth from Douglas Shire Council brought together a committee of local volunteers as well as Jabalbina and Douglas Chamber for meetings in September.
The local business community has stepped up and offered their support with some very generous donations for the event,” she said.
Ms Smith-Marron said this year is all about community and Christmas Spirit.
“After such a strange year when so many were disconnected from family and friends, this is a great way to give back to the people and community and for people to reconnect and support our local market and store traders in Mossman,” she said.
The street will be buzzing with free rides for the kids, market stalls, food trucks, and entertainment including carol singers and performances by local artists.
Chamber and Council are supporting some free rides for the kids and not-so-little kids.
There will be a visit from Santa and the Walker Brothers will be playing along with local music students.
Douglas Shire Mayor Michael Kerr said he expects a magical night.
“Needless to say, it’s been a tough year for this region, and the Douglas Street Festival allows us to unite in Christmas spirit and good cheer.
“With rides for the kids, a raft of entertainment, plenty of food & drink and last-minute Christmas shopping, there is something for everyone.”
Front street in Mossman will be closed to all traffic both ways from Mill Street to Bow Street for the Douglas Street Festival from 3pm until 11pm on Friday 18 December 2020.
Traffic Management will allow vehicles to depart the area up until a hard closure from 6pm till 10pm.
Alternative detour routes will be in place along Wilson Street and Williams Street for the duration of the event.
