Work has commenced on the site of the $300 million Accor Fairmont luxury resort, set to be built in Port Douglas.

Property developer, Chiodo Corp has announced demolition of the site’s existing structure is now underway on Port Douglas Road between the Oaks Hotels and Resorts and the Mirage Country Club.

Kadem Builders will undertake the demolition work, with the developers aiming to clean and beautify the current eyesore which has sat dormant for 15 years.

Construction on the site, which includes 253 luxury rooms, several restaurants and bars, a day spa, and conference and wedding facilities, is set to begin in the first quarter of 2021.

Whilst a project builder is yet to be appointed, Chiodo Principal, Paul Chiodo said his team is looking to put the project out to tender early next year.

“Having witnessed the anticipation around this project since it was announced in early 2020, it is an amazing feeling to see our vision on track to fruition,” he said.

“With our more recent project, Amba House (a collection of 10 luxury residences) in Port Douglas due for completion in March, we are thrilled that this new hotel will give us the opportunity to spend more time in this wonderful part of the world.

“We have an affinity for Port Douglas and following a rough 12 months for this beautiful town, it is fantastic to be part of a project which will put back into the local economy.”

In September, Chiodo released designs for the luxury resort while announcing the appointment of Accor Fairmont as its chosen hotel operator, which will make Port Douglas home to Australia’s first Fairmont hotel.

Developers have said the nature-inspired design is set to blend sustainability, culture, and luxury while blending seamlessly with nature, reflecting its World Heritage-listed surrounds of the Great Barrier Reef and Daintree Rainforest.
