Council to review water restrictions

Douglas Shire Council said in a statement today that it will review its water restriction status early next week.
In August, Newsport reported that level one water restrictions had come into effect across the shire as water intake levels continued to drop due to low amounts of rainfall in 2020.
“The Rex Creek intake level continues to drop towards 300mm with no significant rainfall predicted for September.
“For comparison, the intake level was 500mm at this time last year and dropped to its lowest below 100mm, during Level three water restrictions in December last year.”
A spokesman for Council said they are monitoring levels at the Rex Creek Intake which has experienced varying levels with recent sporadic rainfall in the catchment.
“The rainfall forecast also contributes to a level of confidence about future creek levels and late next week appears to be firming up with more consistent tropical rain.
“The water level is currently sitting at about 300mm with an extraction rate of about 150 litres per second,” the spokesman said.
Level one water restrictions only allow the use of sprinklers and irrigation systems on alternate days, between 6:00am to 8:00am and 6:00pm and 8:00pm.
