Four-wheel drivers and adventurers rejoice, the infamous CREB Track will reopen this weekend, Saturday 22 August 2020 and is ready to be explored.

The 71km-long CREB Track, which starts just north of Daintree Village, will reopen for the first time since the wet season, with COVID restrictions and road works keeping it closed most of the year.

The CREB Track is regarded as one of Australia’s most spectacular and challenging four-wheel-drive trails.

Local 4WD enthusiast, Chris Towan, said it’s great to have the track open again.

“It is a valuable local commodity,” he said.  

Mr Towan said 4WD enthusiast should pay the track a visit and take advantage of it while it’s open, especially if you haven’t done so before.

“It is worth the effort.

“It brings you out at Wujal Wujal and you can come back along the Bloomfield Track through Cape Tribulation and you can visit some of the Daintree business while you’re there,” he said.

A Douglas Shire Council spokesperson said the track is very steep and rough in parts and is only suitable for well-equipped 4WD vehicles and motorists with vehicle recovery experience. It is not suitable for trailers.

Motorists are urged to take caution and be vigilant for vehicles travelling in the opposite direction as the track is narrow.

After rainfall, the track can become treacherous or impassable and vehicles easily become bogged or stranded.

Because of the hazardous conditions, the Council may temporarily close the track without warning. Check the road conditions via the Council’s website.

The track crosses through the Burungu Aboriginal community and visitors are requested to seek permission from Burungu Aboriginal Corporation before accessing Roaring Meg Falls.

The beautiful waterhole of important cultural significance to the Eastern Kuku Yalanji (Buru) people who consider it taboo for men to visit the top of the falls, which is recognised as a women’s site.
