Annual Salsa Sorensen golf day ready for tee off

CHARITY

The annual Brian Salsa Sorensen charity golf day, which has raised more than $140,000 since its inception in 2009, will fall in line with current times and will not be raising any money or asking sponsors for prizes.

The event, in memory of Brian Sorensen who died in 2008, is on Sunday 23 August 2020 at the Palmer Sea Reef Golf Club. A shot gun start is scheduled for 12.30pm and there is a full complement of 120 players in the field.

“In these times we just felt it was not appropriate to make approaches to the businesses for prizes and this will be the first time since 2009 we will also not be raising money,” said event organiser Jenni Sorensen.

Over the years, many local sporting, community groups as well as not-for-profits and schools have benefited from the proceeds of this event.

“This is a fun year with minimal fundraising, meaning no prizes, no grants given and low entry fees. We're calling on our Salsa Sorensen community, previous players and sponsors to come along and have a fun day and don't forget to BYO SSA hat!

“A light lunch is provided with the golf cart plus there will be the Bendigo Bank Community BBQ on the 10th supplying a sausage sizzle for a gold coin donation: so bring your appetite,” said Jenni.

Last year, five Douglas Shire clubs and organisations shared in grant money raised through the Salsa Sorensen Association.

Great Barrier Reef Legacy, the Mossman and District Gymnastics Club, the Douglas Shire Motor Sports Association, the Douglas Shire Hockey Club, and Mossman Primary State School P&C were all granted funding.

In 2019, players and sponsors collectively raised more than $22,500 for the Salsa Sorensen Association.

In 2014 the Salsa Sorensen Association Inc. was incorporated as a Queensland Association and is managed by a board of local directors.
